We learned the German word Wandern as "to hike" in one of our Pimsleur audio lessons about a year ago. We both laughed at first because, frankly, it's fun to say and it's easy to remember as it sounds a lot the English word "wander". This is, in fact, a less common but perfectly valid translation as well. But what an interesting point worth pausing on, that the Germans have, perhaps, a greater appreciation for what a hike really is, and that we also assumed some commonality between these words. For is a hike not the freedom to wander in nature, or to wander in one's thoughts? Maybe more generally, they are moments we intentionally allow ourselves to wander in life.
We would like to introduce you to our blog. Here we will document our more explicit goals, whether they be peaks to summit or trails to ski. We will likely write at length about planning, lack of planning, setbacks, and goals that we fail to achieve. With any luck, we will have a few victories to share as well. We intend for this to be informative and hopefully entertaining! Beyond all of that though, we hope that the spirit of Wandern will encourage you to join us in considering the call of mountains, the song that has allured many before us and many to come. We hope you will wander with us!
